Should I get an ultrasound before an abortion?

The short answer is YES. Having an ultrasound before any type of abortion is important. Here are a few reasons why.

• You need to know if the embryo has implanted in the uterine wall and not outside of the uterus. In some cases, the embryo will implant in or on a fallopian tube and this results in a tubal pregnancy. A tubal pregnancy needs to be treated promptly and uses a different type of procedure to be safely and correctly removed. 

• An ultrasound confirms a pregnancy, whereas pregnancy tests can sometimes produce a false negative. 

• An ultrasound will confirm the gestational age and evaluate whether or not an abortion is appropriate. 

• An abortion may cause life threatening complications to the woman when abnormal circumstances are present in which case you would not know unless you have had an ultrasound to confirm any abnormal circumstances.
