How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

A chemical abortion (the abortion pill) is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks after your last menstrual period but should not be taken before 4 weeks. The first drug stops the pregnancy from developing, and the second begins contractions. Side effects can include heavy bleeding, blood clots, cramping and contractions, fever, infection, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pelvic pain, ulcers, and sepsis. If the abortion is incomplete, a surgical procedure may be needed.

Do not take the abortion pill if your pregnancy has not been confirmed, if you are allergic to the drugs, have high blood pressure or a heart condition, if you have an IUD in place, or are at risk for an ectopic pregnancy. If you have an incomplete abortion, large blood clots, a fever over 104, or allergic reactions to the medication, contact 911 immediately. Medical professionals need to know what drugs are in your system. There is no legal penality for having an abortion in Nebraska.
